BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (Oct. 09-12, 2008): By any standard CHRR 17 was three days of drag racing, renewed friendships, memories, drama, cacklecars and fun that surpassed all the superlatives previously endowed on our premier event in the past. In spite of an economy best described as anemic, the hallowed grounds of Famoso Raceway were full of race cars and the stands packed with fans. Mother Nature was in on the act as well supplying perfect racing weather that made the Bakersfield Chamber of Commerce proud.

The Top Fuel final was anti-climatic with Brett Harris (who had run 5.69 in the previous round) paired with Rick White who had been running consistent 5.7 times all weekend. However the potent and usually reliable hemi in the Nitro Thunder dragster went sour at the end of its burnout. By the time Harris had backed up it was obvious to all that this poor engine needed to be put out of its misery. White gave the fans a show running a solid 5.819 at 255.89 for the money. It was later learned that Harris' engine broke an exhaust rocker arm.

The Nostalgia Funny Cars, ran Sunday in a "Chicago style" match race. Bucky Austin took the honors in his "Northwest Hitter" over Chris Krabill in the Pedaler. Austin's winning 5.749 at 244.03 was the quickest pass ever for a Nostalgia Nitro Funny Car.

The High Speed Motorsports team may have lost the battle (not winning the event) but won the war as Troy Green battled Jim Murphy to the wire to become the first Heritage Series Top Fuel Champion. When Murphy lost to Brett Harris in the semis, Green's 5 point lead was enough to seal the deal. Minutes later Green lost a close one to the eventual winner, Rick White. The only thing that would have made the points race more tightly contested would have been if Brad Thompson was not injured at Boise and unable to race here. We would of had a classic three horse race for the crown.

Now it is our pleasure to present the end results of the efforts of Tony Thacker, Steve Gibbs, Greg Sharp, Wayne Allison, Bill Groak and the rest of the staff at the NHRA Wally Parks Motorsports Museum. More so to Blake and John Bowser and the Famoso Raceway staff for superbly preparing the facility - especially the track itself. Their Safety Safari are second to none. These folks know how to run a drag race. And of course, many thanks to all our great photographers without whom this whole deal would be moot.

Qualifying - Session One

2:05 p.m. Friday - the first of only two qualifying sessions got under way. Weather conditions: air temperature 63 degrees, relative humidity 24 percent, barometer 29.91 inches, track temperature 88 degrees. Perfect racing conditions.

The first two drivers to test the Bakersfield Bite were Mark Malde in the very yellow Birky Bunch car and Ed Schwartz in the very period correct fueler of Don Danhof.

Schwartz was soft at the hit then incredibly smoked the tires at the 60' block.

Malde left just fine.

Once again the Birky Chevy had a short fuse and devoured a rack of pistons by the 1000' mark.

Malde, covered in oil came to a safe stop. His 6.275 at 170.48 did not set the bar very high.

Schwartz just coasted through.

After a 30 minute clean-up pair two rolled through the waterbox. Shannon Stewart in Bob Richardson's "Circuit Breaker" was paired with Rick McGee in the Tedford & McGee "Overtime Special".

McGee was a tad soft at the hit but started to pick it up after the 60' mark.

Stewart's 60' time was 2 hundredths better.

McGee was off pace with a 6.087 at 237.78 while Stewart carded a shut off early 6.158 at 211.21. Good data runs for both cars.

Pair three was Rick White in the Neal & White entry from San Diego and Mike McClennan in the Mike Fuller Motorsports car.

While White was going about his burnout procedure, the engine in Fuller's car died before the burnout. It was a single for White.

White legged it the the stripe and did set the bar - a very nice 5.797 at 254.45 serving notice that he and Chuck were here to play.

With the first of many 5.7 runs for the weekend on the board the next pair was Denver Schutz in the Jim Cullen "Raisin Express 2" and Brendan Murry in his Running Wild Racing entry.

Both cars appeared to be effected by the swirling winds on the top end and recorded off pace times. Schutz carded 6.317 at 249.37 while Murry clicked it early to a 6.728 at 166.35.

Since the drivers higher in the points standings get to choose when they run in the first session, most choose toward the end. So, the first pair of "hitters" were Jim Murphy in his WW2 Racing entry and Pete Kaiser in John Erich's "Ground Zero".

Both cars left hard - Murphy racking up one of may stout 60' time (1.04).

Murphy stopped the clocks with a nice 5.818 at 258.32 which put him in the #2 hole after session one. Kaiser carded a nice baseline pass at 5.995 at 248.34.

Out next was Jack Harris in John Rodeck's brand new Paso Posse "business coupe" and Terry Cox in the beautiful Cheetah IV fueler.

At the hit Cox moved the best while Harris' ride was soft and never really did come to life.

Harris clicked it way early.

Check out the right canard wing. Ya think somebody should fix that?

Cox carded a nice even 6.250 at 236.03 which would serve as a baseline. Harris coasted through after collecting some bottom end data. One shot left.

Under Chamber of Commerce skies, Troy Green made his burnout in the High Speed Motorsports "Great White". In the left lane was Rick Williamson in Bill Schwartz's "Hot Rod Bill's" entry. Yet another car that has shed its nose piece to save weight.

After "pedaling" the car before the 330' mark, Green went on to card a very nice 5.812 at 254.95 to land in the #3 hole after session one. Williamson clicked it early to a 6.102 at 207.37.

The last pair out for session one was Rick Rogers in Butch Blair's "Fugowie" and Adam Sorokin at the wheel of the RB Entertainment - Champion Speed Shop entry.

Both cars left hard.

Rogers struck the tires just past the 60' mark and had to pedal it only to strike them again.

Sorokin used up a lot of track then clicked it early to a 6.064 at 231.95. After a couple of attempts to get the car to recover Rogers called it quits and coasted through with a 7.973 at 118.28.

The final driver to take a shot at the #1 spot was Brett Harris in Nitro Thunder (aka Big Red).

Take note that Big Red is not quite as red without its nose piece.

From the hit there was absolutely nothing wrong with this pass.

With a very stout 5.750 at 259.74 Harris became the new leader in the clubhouse as Harris took 'Big Red' right to the top of the heap.
