Two
Qualifying Session
2 - Saturday
1:30 p.m. Unlike
the March Meet which offers three shots to qualify, the CHRR
offered only two which put the tuners and drivers to the test
as they have less room for error. And after a very weak and mixed
bag first session there was a whole lot of jockeying to be done
here.
The first car
out on a single was the current points leader and favorite to
not only win the championship but the CHRR as well - Rick White.

The big
blue car from San Diego left hard.
Incredibly, White
smoked the tires about 150' out and when he pedaled it the engine
went up way up. They had broken a rear end leaving the car DOA.
Coasting through with a 8.369 at 105.57 left White sitting #12
but with only 17 cars entered many felt that would hold.
The first pair
out for the last session were the #15 and #17 cars of Mark Hyla
and Ed Schwartz.
Hyla looked like
he was on his way to a "five," but the engine started
smoking past half track and the car nosed over (6.105 at 211.56).
Schwartz's car was very soft on the launch, but he was quick
enough (6.846 at 185.26) to bump into the field putting Mike
Chrisman on the outside and Denver Schutz on the bubble at 9.851.
SRO Crowd
is a norm for Saturday's at a CHRR.
See the
race any way you can....
Next out were
two more cars currently sitting at the bottom of the field. Mike
Chrisman and Terry Cox
The red
car had more at the hit but Chrisman also left better than normal.
Chrisman had
some decent numbers to half track but shut it off for no apparent
reason to a 8.217 at 107.97.
Cox made a strong
run (6.106 at 235.78), but sacrificed a few pistons to the aluminum
gods in the lights. That bumped Schutz and Adam Sorokin was then
on the bump at 8.626.
Pair three was
Denver Schutz and Mark Malde. The former was sitting #17 while
Malde was solid at #11.
Malde
was a little soft at the hit as was Schutz.
Schutz moved
well into the field (#9) with a 6.285 at 242.91 which bumped
Sorokin. It also put Rick White on the bump spot at 8.369. Malde
carded a 6.418 at 214.79 which left him #11.
The next pair
were a have (Brendan Murry) and have not (Adam Sorokin) the former
was solidly in at #10 while the Batmoblie was sitting in the
Bat Cave (#17).

Murry
made a decent move at the hit but Sorokin got to the 60' clocks
first.
The odds of Sorokin
not runner better than the 8.36 bump were slim at best and his
6.041 at 225.11 not only jumped him all the way up to the #5
hole but more dramatically bumped the points leader, Rick White,
out of the field. A shocking development for sure.
Murry, still
not getting 1320 feet out of his new car, improved with a 6.151
at just 186.87.
Out next was
Mike McClennan and Brad Thompson. With the field set this was
all about position on the ladder... not to mention a round one
tune-up.
Thompson hooked
hard and racked up nice early numbers. McClennan was a bit soft
but got away cleanly.
Thompson had
the chutes out before the traps and still carded a 6.067 at just
199.33. That moved him into the top half of the field while McClennan
gave up early as well with a 6.460 at 184.53.
The sixth pair
of the session paired up Brett Harris and Rick Rogers. Harris
was safely in the field, but needed to step up to get as many
points as possible in qualifying, trailing White by 59 coming
into the event.
Both
cars had very aggressive leaves and impressive early times.
By the
60' clocks Harris was pulling away.
Harris left no
doubt he was here to chase down White as his 5.809 (would stand
for low ET of the meet until the final round) at 252.17 put him
at the top of the qualifying list and took a hunk of points out
of White's lead. Rogers laid down a nice number himself moving
to the #2 spot with a 5.910 at 255.75 (top speed of qualifying).
Incremental:
60ft-1.049 sec., 330ft-2.673, 660ft-3.901/204.35 mph, 1,000ft-4.927.
The next to last
pair were Troy Green and Jim Murphy - both in the top half of
the field and the point standings.
Murphy
had a nice launch while Green's ride was a bit soft at the hit.
Murphy stepped
up with a solid 5.978 at 250.97 while Green did not improve carding
a click it early 6.071 at 200.66.
The last pair
of the last session were two drivers you would not expect to
see sitting one and two after the first session. Rick McGee and
Rick Williamson.
At the
hit one knew both these teams were here to play. Nice early numbers
both.
Even though it
was just qualifying this one one hell of a drag race. McGee carded
a career best 5.862 at 245.03 to go into the #2 spot and Williamson
was right there with a 5.885 at 237.90 for #3.
That was it.
Harris lead the pack at 5.809 and Mike Chrisman was on the bump
spot at 8.217. Rick White was the only car to not make the show.
