To avoid a charge
of Top Fuel bias, here are some random shots from the weekend
to share the overall flavor of this years NHRR.
Only four cars
showed up for the ambiguous "Open Fuel" class and the
winner was Gary Wheeler over Anthony Bronge.
The fuel funny
car turnout was dismal to say the least but we'll try to give
some good coverage for those who did come like the Hot Wheels
Mustang driven by Jeff Utterback.
The two Fuel
Alterds on hand were Nanook and the Rat Trap and both put on
a great show all weekend match racing fuel funny cars.
Bob Schneider
in his Comp Eliminator Sizzler. Nice looking piece.
Bill
Norman
Chuck Rearick
and Odie Coker square off in the 2nd round of Jr Fuel. Coker
won with a 7.649 at 173.36 but it was the reaction times that
got my attention. I checked and its not a mistake - how about
a 0.313 for Coker and a 0.406 for Rearick. It's like, you leave
first - no, you leave first, I insist, no I'll wait until you
leave. Get the picture? LOL
Jerry Kumre was
in the seat of the Danger Zone Vega competing in the Open Fuel
class. This alcohol flopper had a rough start (steering wheel
fell off) but came around by Sunday.
Anthony Bronge
was the other flopper entered in the Open Fuel class and was
runner up.
Randy Walls and
his Super Nova Nostalgia Nitro Funny Car was one of the featured
acts hooking up with the Alterds. Randy was also inducted into
the Kentucky Motorsports Hall of Fame.
"I
drive anything" Mitch King was in the seat of this Jungle
Jim tribute Camaro.
Jim Rodarmel
flashed the V sign during his burnout and it worked (at least
this round. Jim's real deal 1965 Woody car is as period correct
as you can get while being legal to race.
Mike
Lewis was "the Shoe" in this Don Schumacher Wonder
Wagon tribute flopper.
Bob Crouse vs
Ross Laird in round one of Jr. Fuel. Laird left first but Crouse
caught him.
Mike Milsap's
0.008 RT capped with a 7.789 got a first round win over Steve
Dunkin.
Mike
Milsap got the best of Bob Crouse in round two and went to the
final.
In spite of an
absolutely horrid light (0.671) Anthony Bronge caught Jerry Kumre
for the round one win in Open Fuel.
The good folks
from Air Methods were on hand at the top end. The cool part about
these guys is they do it for free. The deal is, they will be
at ready until they get another call. Their motive - watch the
races.
Denver
Schutz and Adam Sorokin
Dusty McWilliams
brought the NHRA Museum cacklecars out from California and helped
organize the Cacklefest Saturday night.
A spot of refuge
was the Standard 1320 Drag Racing encampment that offered shade
and cold water. It was a popular place.
Bobby
Langley playing with his new digital camera.
Larry
Dixon Jr. with Bill Schneider from Renegade Trailers.
There were several
of these kinds of motorized furniture thingies roaming through
the pits with no reports of injury or death.
By Saturday
afternoon the track was SRO... packed!
We'll close with
Pat & Don Garlits working their souvenir trailer with George
Schreiber in the foreground.
Most
of the people shots from this event went to the coverage on Cacklefest.com. NHRR
