On Thursday night
of the 2009 Winternationals weekend a fund raiser dinner was
held at the NHRA Motorsports Museum called "Wally Parks
Night at the Museum". It was centered around the unveiling
of the new Prudhomme/Shelby Mustang. Lynn Kuhl organized the
whole affair and as usual it was great event. The evening was
highlighted with an impromptu panel discussion which was more
like "horror stories from the past" as the panel consisted
of Mike Dunn, John Force, Don Prudhomme, Ed McCulloch and Jerry
Ruth... but that comes later. The evening started off with the
new car.
Photos and
story by John Ewald
Here
it is - the all new Prudhomme/Shelby Mustang.
Don Prudhomme
and Carroll Shelby
Carroll being
himself was very colorful in his talk to the crowd...I could
listen to his stories for hours.
The audience
was made up of a host of characters...here's a photo story of
many who were on hand.
Steve
Gibbs with Lynn and Don Prudhomme
Frank Baney stands
next to the SOHC Ford powered Shelby Super Snake which his dad,
Lou raced with Shelby.
A rather
stoic Jerry Ruth and Bob Fry
Of course
Dave McClelland handled the MC work...he was great as always.
Flopper
pilot "Fast Jack" Beckman sporting a new short hair
cut.
Barry
Weissert and Julie Heise...the museum runs better because of
them!
Nostalgia Jr.
Fuel racer Brian Darcy made the trip from New York to enjoy or
weather? Keep in mind it rained most of the weekend.
Jerry Ruth, Sharon
Muravez, Carroll Shelby, Lynn Kuhl, Bob Danly, Bob Muravez and
Chico Kodama.
Kenny
Youngblood not holding Darr Hawthorn's attention.
One of
the men who started it all...Alex Zendais.
Paula
Karamesines Baldwin and her daughter.
Gibbs
dining with the whole NHRA clan.
John Ewald and
Billy Gibbons, who was at their table (Danly can take photos
too). John rarely show up in photos at these deals but had to
get this one.
Billy
kept us all entertained with his stories..
Gas Ronda
and Cindy Gibbs were all smiles.
Newly
weds Danny and Ashley with papa John.
Beauty
and the beasts...Ed McCulloch, Cindy Gibbs and Ron Capps.
Steve
came by to warn his daughter about theses two... like she didn't
know already.
Force
being Force acted like he was taking drink orders from the AAA
folks.
Brian Darcy and
guest with the classiest lady in drag racing Sharon Muravez and
that guy who hangs around her all the time.
Chico
and Isky...some history here...
Forrest
Lucas, Ruth and Force...BIG contributors to our sport.
Mike
Dunn took on the MC duties to introduce the panel...and the the
shit started flying!
Dunn, Force,
Prudhomme, McCulloch and Ruth...volumes of stories are saved
between these guys ears.
With Ashley in the audience and only
drinking coffee Force was toned down a bit from some of his previous
appearances...but not much!
Actually keeping
stride with Force was Don Prudhomme who it seems has developed
a new since of humor and more appreciation for the history of
our sport...he will even show up at the reunion with the original
Hot Wheels hauler and he's excited about it.
The normally
Un humble Jerry "The King" Ruth was pretty much shut
down by Ed "The Ace" McCulloch... I warned him this
was going to be a rough group.
As you can see
it was a night of laughs and trust me... the discussions will
not show up on TV!
One last one
for now... a shot I had to put this group together as when could
I ever get this much talent and bullshitters together at once!
This is a classic.... John Force, Don Prudhomme, Bill Doner,
Ace McCulloch and King Ruth....need I say more!
