As the sun started to set on
Saturday it was John "Bodie" Smith and Dan Horan Jr.
who rolled out for the funny car final.
Smith absolutely drilled Horan
on the tree (0.033 to a 0.229) and that alone should have been
lights out for Jr.
Holeshot aside, before the tree
Smith took the name of his Dad's car seriously... Entertainer
did indeed entertain.
While Smith was going
up, Horan was playing catch up.
Smith was caught from
several angles doing his best Jungle Jim impersonation.
By the 330' Horan still
haden't caught the flying Smith.
By the 1/8th mile the show was
over and Horan was on his way to a 5.881 at just 216.27 win.
The fans that hung in for the finals were amped by Smith's show.
As it should be on paper, the
final matched the #1 and #2 qualifiers, Mendy Fry and Jim Young.
This was a coin toss.
Young got a chunk on the tree.
His 0.078 to Mendy's 0.134 RT gave him the edge he could have
Young still had the lead
at the 330' mark.
Before the 1/8th mile
blocks Young got out of the groove but never lifted.
Young's tire tracks tell
race was closer than the numbers suggest. Once again the fans
who stayed witnessed one of the best NTF races of the year. With
the win Fry added another notch in the High Speed Motorsports
pistol grip being the 5th team driver to win an unprecedented
8 NHRA Nationsl Hot Rod Reunion Top Fuel title.
Funny Car Winner Dan Horan Jr.
made the long trek from SoCal to get a win for his late Dad,
"Digger Dan" Horan - job well done.
If you ever see a Winners Circle
shot of the High Speed Motorsports team with less than 15 people
in it, its a Photoshop forgery. Race winner and Top Fuel points
leader Mendy Fry surrounded by Team Highspeed celebrate another
6.0 Pro title went to
Mike Taylor who beat Barrie Young in the final.
7.0 Pro trophy went to
Robbie Freels who survived 5 rounds of racing.
7.5 Index winner was
Kelly Freels also went 5 rounds for the title.
Dan Pettinato was on
hand with his "Rat Poison" late model hemi Fiat.
There were only three AA/FA (booked
in) so they were more of an exhibition. Here are some random
shots of these fan favorites over the weekend.
The other two were AA/FA staples,
Randy Bradford in his classic Fiat and Ron Hope in the world
famous "Rat Trap".
