 "THE DRAG RACER'S
BIBLE"
The Standard 1320
eGroup was founded in early 1998 by myself and a few friends,
since then it has grown to more than 225 members. The members'
ages range from 20 to over 75 years old. They represent chassis
builders, hero drivers, car owners, engine builders, manufacturers,
photographers, writers and fans like me. One of the intents of
the group is to preserve the history of the "Drag News Years"
(1955 through 1976). Our common bond is a love for these early
years of drag racing, when cars were unique and backyard engineering
was the norm.
This CD preservation of Drag
News (every page - every photo) is the culmination of a dream
that all Standard 1320 members shared. I would like to personally
thank member Dennis Holding of the Frantic Four "Weekly,
Rivero, Fox & Holding" AA/FD for not only funding this
project but actually making it happen. In addition, a special
thanks to Don Garlits and others for loaning us their extensive
collection of Drag News so we could make this historical project
a reality.

The Drag News "Golden Years"
CD is dedicated to every driver, mechanic, crew-member, car owner,
and sponsor from that era in drag racing history. This CD is
about them!! Their triumphs
their defeats
their sacrifices.
They were the ones who gave this reporter something to write
about and provided the track photographer with action to capture.
It's their stories that fill the pages of nearly 250 issues of
Drag News, so masterfully copied on this CD set. Without Drag
News the drag racing world would not be where it is today
one
of the major attractions in motor sports!!
Published on a weekly basis (50
times a year), and so aptly dubbed " The Drag Racer's Bible",
it could be found at your favorite track, the local speed shop,
or delivered by subscription, right to your front door. From
its southern California offices, and under the editorship of
Doris Herbert, this publication covered the action from coast-to-coast.
If you couldn't make it to your favorite event, Drag News was
there for you, with complete results and photos. The battles
for a spot on its prestigious "Mr. Eliminator" list
were legendary; to set one of its Standard 1320 class records
was an honor, and a visit the winner's circle at a Drag News
Invitational meant you had arrived!
So put on your helmet
fasten
those safety belts
and make sure your chute is packed, cause
you are in for quite a ride. Welcome to

Years"! -- Bud De Boer

NOTE: Bud De Boer's reports on
Great Lakes Dragway, Union Grove, WI, began appearing in Drag
News in 1962 and continued until 1964. Then in 1965, he became
the Field Representative for Drag News, leaving the West Coast
in mid-April, and for the next 6 months, visiting as many drag
strips and speed shops as his schedule would allow. Bud has many
fond memories of those years, the highlight being the Fuel &
Gas Championships at Bakersfield in 1964 and 1965. He says "being
at the event itself was an awesome experience, but covering it
for Drag News
that was really something special".
