- Ed McCulloch's "Whipple & McCulloch"
There may not be a more versatile
individual in the sport of drag racing than Ed McCulloch. Today,
Ed is primarily known as the crew chief for Don Prudhomme's "Skoal"
Chevrolet that is driven by Ron Capps. Prior to that he was part
of the great McDonald's team that dominated the fuel classes
in the early and mid 1990's. Before that he drove some of the
most feared Funny Cars in the sport, some of which he owned and
others that he drove for a variety of different people. But regardless
of who's name was on the registration, there was one thing that
you could always count on and that was that Ed McCulloch would
be a winner. With six NHRA U.S. National's titles to his credit,
the man they call "Ace" has visited the Indy winner's
circle more than just about any other driver, and he's been there
in both a Top Fuel Car and in a Funny Car, and he's been there
in three different decades, and not many drivers can make either
of those statements. Ed's first, and maybe his most emotional
Indy win, came in 1971 while he was driving the famed "Whipple
and McCulloch" car that was owned by his good friend, Art
Whipple. The win was extra special because it came just one year
after a towing accident saw the team's first car burn to the
ground on the way to the Nationals. Deprived of the opportunity
to compete the year before, Ed and Art more than made up for
it with one of the most dominating performances in Indy history,
including a string of 6.60 elapsed times that left everyone in
their wake, including Sammy Miller, "Big" Jim Dunn,
Connie Kalitta and Dale Pulde. Dale, who was driving one of the
Mickey Thompson cars, had the best seat in the house in the finals
to watch the "Ace" win the first NHRA national event
of his career, and what a perfect place to do it!
