HERM PETERSEN ON FIRE - AGAIN. POMONA
1974
Most know the story of Herm's horrible
fire at OCIR in 1973.
This is the car Woody built while Herm was fighting
for his live, then months
of re-hab. Over the
winter this car went together and made race ready by many.
We towed down from Poulsbo, WA for the NHRA Winternationals
with only one
run on the car. Against the advise
of damn near everybody, Herm willed himself
to
drive again, and he did. This shot was the first pass in the
new car and one
can only imagine what went through
our minds on the starting line. We got him
out
and there was only two singes on his suit. Thankfully, this never
happened again.

in the 70s. Routinely going over 200
mph in the quater mail with
the same hemi engines
that powered top fuel dragsters and funny cars.

Ray Caselli, probably the most famous fuel Flatbottom driver
ever
lost his life (broken neck) on this run in
at Oakland Marine Stadum in 1973.
If you know
drag boats, you know of Ray. For a hard core fan, I have 12 shots

I relied on parachutes to stop my dragsters, they
mounted on the car.
Drag boast put a chute on
the driver. As seen here, they were designed
to
get the driver away from the carnage. There are no numbers of
how many
lives they save but one can say more
than a few.

FRANK DADE HAULING ASS
Frank Dade was without question one of the greatest
top fuel hydro driver
to ever strap on a chute
pack. Frank passed away last year at 92. His legacy
in
drag boats is unsurpassed. He is best remembered as the shoe
of "Smoke
On The Water", the first
Brendell hull that shook up the BFH class like no other.
Here is the first of two photos of Dade in the "Mr.
Ed" Sanger hull at Long Beach
in 1975. The
boat perfectly hooked up, hauling ass. RIP Frank.
