Nothing
But Funny Cars
With the race
being canceled on the 17th most of the remaining Funny Car field
didn't come back due a commitment in Tucson. In fact only three
cars came back to vie for the title. And because the Funny Car
program was so fractured I'll start at the end with the final
and then just post Capps wild ride and some of the best shots
of the weekend.
Funny
Car Final
The odds on favorite
was Jason Rupert in his Mert Littlefield tribute car who broke
every one's back in qualifying with a 5.693 @ 256.16. However,
that mattered not in the end when Rupert got drilled on the starting
line (0.45 to .132) by Kris Krabil who took the crown with a
5.908 at 242.41 to a much quicker 5.824 at 5.824 at 250.78.
Tuner
Cory Lee, Kris Krabil and owner, Gary Turner.

Arguably the
top story of the weekend was the team of Worsham & Capps.
With the Big Show idle the pair brought Del's Blue Max out to
play and were doing great until round one. After qualifying #2
with a 5.768 at 248.10 Capps was paired with Dennis Swearingen
in the opener and was well on his way to a win when....

Coming off his
Top Fuel win at Gainesville, Del didn't want to screw up his
starting line routine by driving his funny car so he put Ron
in it.
Capps got off
the line first and carded a 0.995 sixty foot time. The Mustang
ran hard until near mid-track, where the blower goes BANG, big
time, and launched the body up and over the car sending Ron bouncing
to the other end.
Obviously Capps
got bounced around but other than a few minor aches and pains
recovered nicely -- the car, not so much. Worsham was none too
happy to see his toy all banged up.
