Top Fuel and Funny Car Round One

TOP FUEL

Prior to eliminations, Spokane put on a world class presentation of our flag. Unlike other sports, motor racing in the USA always honors our flag and the fans never kneel.

When the National Anthem ended, Top Fuel began. First out was Pete Wittenberg and Phil Ruskowski.

Wittenberg left first and never looked back.

With the race well in hand Wittenberg took out the top end blocks handing the win to Ruskowski. This was his first round win in NTF.

The second pair matched Tyler Hilton and Adam Sorokin.

An epic hole shot by Sorokin literally left Hilton waiting at the altar.

With Hilton looking at his chutes, Sorokin clocked a 6.00 at 196 for the win. Hilton's much quicker and faster 5.93 ET at 244 MPH was for naught.

The last pair was Jim Murphy and Bret Williamson.

Murphy left first and by mid track appeared to have the race in hand.

Murphy had the win, then he didn't. At the 1000' mark the #6 piston went south and Jim was oiled in. Williamson got him at the stripe by .040 of a second. Murphy hasn't been able to get a break all season.

Being low qualifier, Mendy got the first round bye.

Shelar used the free pass to try something in the clutch can that produced the desired result at the hit but went into severe tire shake past the tree.

FUNNY CAR

First pair out for E1 was Kris Krabill and Dan Horan Jr.

Krabill nailed Horan to the tree.

Thoughts of a huge upset went out the window when Krabill had issues and shut off.

Pair two pitted the reigning champ Bobby Cottrell and rookie, Mike Peck.

Not to be outdone, Peck had 2 BUG's

Cottrell got a .70 jump and never looked back.

Cottrell pulled away to a 5.812 at 245.98. Peck ran a game 5.846 at 242.38.

Next to last pair was Nathan Sitko and Jeff Arend. Good to see Nathan back after that bad wreck a couple of years ago.

Sitko got a slight jump and was giving Arend a race.

At the stripe it was Arend with a 5.785 at 246.50 while Sitko was there with a 5.845 at 243.83.
